15 August commemorates, in Catholic tradition, the Assumption of Mary into heaven. It is one of the great Marian solemnities of the liturgical year and, in Spain, a feast deeply rooted in the popular imagination of summer, when heat and holidays coincide with processions, street parties and pilgrimages.
Belief in the Assumption is ancient in East and West; the dogma was proclaimed in 1950, but the 15 August feast had been celebrated for centuries before. In many towns and cities the day overlaps with the main August festivals: Our Lady of the Assumption is patron or title of numerous parishes, and the procession or high mass sets the local calendar.
Beyond worship, 15 August works as a family gathering day in the heart of the summer season. Beaches, terraces and fairgrounds fill up; inland, fairs and clubs carry the celebration into the night. That double face — devotion and summer leisure — explains why the date remains so present in everyday life.
As a fixed-date solemnity, the Assumption closes the central stretch of August on the festive calendar. It does not need to move when it falls on a weekend to keep its meaning: it is the day many localities live both their religious feast and their busiest summer moment.
