How to read this day

What “holiday today” means in Spain

This page answers, for Spain's civil date (2026-10-09), whether the published festivos.io index records a national holiday, a regional holiday or municipal local feasts. The cut-over follows Europe/Madrid: after midnight on the peninsula “today” changes even if UTC is still on the previous calendar day.

Spain's working calendar is layered. A national holiday appears in regional calendars at national level; a regional holiday covers one or more autonomous communities; a local feast applies only to municipalities that publish it. The same date can therefore be a working day in one province and a public holiday in another, so check the municipality before planning a close, a shipment or a day off. Regional names below come from published calendars, not from editorial invention.

Below you get four status cards (national, regional, local and residents) and, when local feasts exist, a multi-column list grouped by autonomous community with a link to each municipality. Within each group we surface larger towns first by municipal-register population. The resident total merges INE codes so nobody is counted twice when scopes overlap.

To project deadlines or count working days forward, open the working-days calculator and pick your municipality. Local coverage keeps growing: see coverage, methodology and the free API if you integrate calendars into a product, a bot or an internal workflow. This page does not invent holiday names: it only shows what the published index already contains for the date, with clear links onward to municipality calendars, long weekends 2026 and the dataset coverage map.

FAQ

About holidays today

How do I know if today is a holiday where I live?

Open your municipality on festivos.io (search or a link in the columned list). The municipal calendar combines the published national, regional and local layers for that INE code.

What is the difference between national, regional and local?

National: state-wide scope in published calendars. Regional: one or more autonomous communities. Local: only municipalities that publish that feast. The same date can mix several scopes.

How is the resident count calculated?

Municipalities on holiday today (national, regional or local) are merged by INE code and summed from the INE municipal register, with no duplicates. If a reference needed to close the scope is missing, we do not publish a partial figure.

Do these figures replace the BOE or a regional gazette?

No. We keep official references for orientation; for a labour or legal decision, check the published source.

Can I query the same day via API?

Yes. The daily reverse index and analytics shards are on the free keyless API, along with municipality and region calendars.
