Corpus Christi means "Body of Christ" in Latin. While Holy Week remembers the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus, Corpus Christi puts the focus on the presence of Christ in the Eucharist and symbolically takes it to the streets. That is why it is celebrated with solemn processions, monstrances, altars, music, incense, floral carpets and decorated streets.
Its date is mobile because it depends on the Easter calendar: traditionally it falls on the Thursday after the solemnity of the Holy Trinity, about sixty days after Easter Sunday, so it oscillates between the end of May and mid-June. In 2026 it corresponds to Thursday, 4 June.
As a regional holiday, it is a non-working day throughout Castilla-La Mancha, including the provinces of Toledo, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara and Albacete. In the rest of Spain it is not a general regional holiday, although municipalities may reserve one of their two local holidays for it.
The Toledo Corpus Christi is one of the most famous in Spain: the historic center is covered with awnings, flowers, aromatic plants and tapestries, and the procession, led by the monumental Custody of Arfe, becomes one of the great religious, cultural and tourist events of the year.
