It is the official day of the Principality. Law 5/1984 declared 8 September Asturias Day and a regional holiday. The date coincides with the festival of Our Lady of Covadonga, known as La Santina, one of Asturias’s main religious and historical references and the focus of one of northern Spain’s most deeply rooted pilgrimages.
Around 8 September, the Royal Site of Covadonga hosts religious events such as the open-air mass at the Lakes, the solemn mass in the Basilica of Santa María la Real and the procession of La Santina to the Holy Cave. The sanctuary, also linked to the memory of Covadonga in Asturian tradition, becomes one of the central points of the celebration.
Each year the Principality chooses a town or district as the venue for institutional events and the cultural programme. Concerts, food fairs, traditional sport and Asturian flags are a regular part of the day in towns and cities.
In the working calendar, Asturias Day is a holiday of the Principality and not of the rest of Spain. It falls on the same date as Extremadura Day, but each holiday applies only in its own community.
It coincides with the festival of Our Lady of Covadonga (La Santina), patron saint of Asturias.
