What is Ceuta Day

The date commemorates the appointment of Pedro de Meneses as the first governor of Ceuta by King John I of Portugal, on 2 September, 1415, after the Portuguese conquest of the city. Today it functions as an institutional day of the autonomous city, with official events that usually include an institutional event and the delivery of recognitions or distinctions, in addition to cultural, sports and tourist activities.

Ceuta is not part of any autonomous community: it has its own self-government regime recognized by its Statute of Autonomy. The working calendar distinguishes national and regional holidays from the holidays of the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, which is why Ceuta Day appears as a specific Ceuta holiday.

It should not be confused with Our Lady of Africa, patron saint of the city, which is celebrated on 5 August and is also a holiday in Ceuta. While 5 August has a religious and patron saint character, 2 September has an institutional and historical meaning.
