The date is the official day of the community. Law 4/1985, on the Coat of Arms, Anthem and Day of Extremadura, set 8 September as a regional holiday. The day is traditionally linked to Our Lady of Guadalupe, patron saint of Extremadura, whose image is venerated in the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe, in the province of Cáceres, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
Guadalupe concentrates much of the religious programme: mass, procession and floral offering. The monastery and town are also a historical reference for Extremadura and for its cultural link with Ibero-America, associated with the Guadalupe patronage.
On the institutional side, the Medals of Extremadura — the Junta’s highest distinction — are usually presented on the eve of or around the date, often in a ceremony at the Roman Theatre of Mérida, the regional capital. Municipalities in Badajoz and Cáceres also schedule their own cultural, sporting and civic events.
In the working calendar, 8 September is a holiday of Extremadura and not of the rest of Spain. It should be distinguished from other Marian holidays in August or September and from Hispanic Day on 12 October, dates with which the Guadalupe dedication is sometimes confused.
It coincides with the festival linked to Our Lady of Guadalupe, patron saint of Extremadura.
