9 October commemorates the entry of Jaume I the Conqueror into the city of Valencia in 1238, a date associated with the historical origin of the ancient Kingdom of Valencia. The Statute of Autonomy recognises that day as the Community’s day, and the working calendar applies it as a regional holiday in all three provinces: Valencia, Alicante and Castellón.
In the city of Valencia the Senyera plays a central role. Among the most characteristic events are the ceremonial lowering of the flag, the civic procession, the Te Deum in the Cathedral and the floral offering to Jaume I in the Parterre. The day combines historical memory, local symbols and civic celebration.
The Generalitat organises institutional events each year, including distinctions and awards of the Generalitat. Many municipalities across the Community schedule concerts, cultural events and popular celebrations, whose times vary by edition.
It is not a holiday in the rest of Spain: only in the Valencian Community. It should not be confused with other historical 9 October dates of the Crown of Aragon or with local holidays specific to each municipality.
