The date commemorates the approval of the Organic Law of the Statute of Autonomy of the Region of Murcia, on 9 June, 1982, the norm with which the territory was established as an autonomous community with its own institutions and the capacity for self-government. It is not a religious or local festival, but rather an institutional and civil celebration linked to the territorial organization of Spain that emerged after the 1978 Constitution.
As it is a regional holiday, it is a non-working day in all the municipalities of the community, both inland and on the coast, including Murcia, Cartagena, Lorca, Molina de Segura, Yecla or Caravaca de la Cruz. The Region of Murcia is also a uniprovincial community, so it coincides territorially with the province of Murcia, while the Regional Assembly has its headquarters in Cartagena.
The day is usually accompanied by institutional events, cultural activities, concerts and awards ceremonies organized by regional institutions, and also serves to highlight the Murcian identity, its symbols, its orchard and its gastronomy.
