The date remembers the constitution of the old Province of Cantabria on 28 July 1778, a landmark in the historical organisation of the mountain territory. It has no religious or military origin: its meaning is institutional and civic, linked to the memory of the juntas and to the community’s political identity.
The celebration is closely tied to Puente San Miguel, in the municipality of Reocín, home to the historic Casa de Juntas, a symbol of Cantabria’s institutional beginnings. Official events, speeches and cultural activities usually take place there, although the holiday applies throughout the community.
It is also popularly called Cantabria Day. In the working calendar it is a holiday of this community and not of the rest of Spain. Each year’s programme may include music, traditional sport and events in different municipalities.
It should not be confused with the festival of La Bien Aparecida, patron saint of Cantabria, celebrated on 15 September and also a regional holiday. 28 July looks to the institutions; 15 September, to Marian patronage.
It commemorates the constitution of the old Province of Cantabria (28 July 1778).
