The date remembers that on 1 March, 1983, the Statute of Autonomy of the Balearic Islands came into force, the norm that allowed Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera to establish their own self-government institutions. Law 9/1984 declared that day as Balearic Islands Day, although at first it was established as an official but working date.
The Statute of Autonomy also includes the official symbols of the community, among them the Balearic flag: four horizontal red bars on a yellow background, with a purple barracks in the upper left and a white castle with five towers. The celebration does not exalt one island above the others, but rather underlines a common collective identity while respecting the unique character of each one.
Every 1 March, cultural, sports, gastronomic and institutional activities are organized throughout the different islands. Over time, the date has gained prominence in the working calendar, where it can appear as a holiday or be moved to the next day when it is officially set.
