The date commemorates the revolt of the Communities of Castile against the policy of Charles I, a young king raised in Flanders and surrounded by foreign advisors. Many cities on the Castilian plateau feared losing autonomy and the ability to decide over their own affairs, a discontent that led to an uprising with political and social causes.
The community movement had its outcome in Villalar, current Villalar de los Comuneros (Valladolid), where on 23 April, 1521 the forces of Charles I defeated the community troops. Its main leaders, Juan de Padilla, Juan Bravo and Francisco Maldonado, were arrested and sentenced to death after a summary trial.
The celebration was institutionalized with Law 3/1986, which declared 23 April a Community holiday for all purposes, when the commemoration of Villalar had already acquired a festive and popular character. The most representative events take place in Villalar de los Comuneros, with political, cultural, musical and popular events, although the date is celebrated in locations throughout the community.
