The date remembers the uprising of 2 May, 1808, when part of the people of Madrid rebelled against the presence of Napoleon's French troops. The trigger was the transfer of members of the royal family out of the Royal Palace, which triggered a revolt led not only by the military, but also by neighbors, artisans and common people.
Among the most remembered figures are captains Daoiz and Velarde, from the Monteleón Artillery Park, and Manuela Malasaña. That same day, an appeal was launched from Móstoles to the Spaniards to come to the defense of the nation, and the uprising was linked to the beginning of the War of Independence against the Napoleonic occupation. The episode was harshly repressed and the next day the executions took place, immortalized by Goya in The 2nd of May 1808 in Madrid and The 3rd of May in Madrid.
Law 8/1984 declared 2 May as a Community of Madrid Day as a symbol of the right to self-government of the region, established as an autonomous community in 1983. Every year it is celebrated with institutional events, tributes, historical recreations and cultural activities in different municipalities.
