What is Eid al-Fitr

Eid Fitr is one of the most important celebrations in Islam. It marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month during which Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, and ushers in Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar. The FundéuRAE recommends in Spanish the forms Eid al-Fitr or Festival of the End of the Fast, although in the Melilla calendar it appears as Eid Fitr.

As the Islamic calendar is lunar, the date varies each year with respect to the Gregorian calendar and can fall in March or April. It is a holiday in the Autonomous City of Melilla, where Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu traditions coexist; The 2026 working calendar also includes the Feast of Sacrifice (Aid Al Adha) on 27 May.

The day usually begins with a collective prayer — in Melilla, in the multifunctional square of San Lorenzo or, if the weather is not good, in the city's mosques — and continues with family visits, meals and sweets. Before the prayer, zakat al-fitr is practiced, a donation intended for people in need so that no one is left out of the celebration.
