The Diada is linked to 11 September 1714, the date of the fall of Barcelona at the end of the War of the Spanish Succession. That day marked the end of the Catalan institutions of the time and the start of the new political order associated with the Nueva Planta decrees. Law 1/1980 established 11 September as the National Day of Catalonia; in Catalan it is called Diada Nacional de Catalunya and is also known as Onze de Setembre.
Rafael Casanova, chief councillor during the siege, is one of the historical figures most associated with that date. In Barcelona the Diada usually includes floral offerings at his monument and at the Fossar de les Moreres, as well as institutional events of the Generalitat and the City Council.
Beyond the capital, many municipalities mark the day with senyeres, cultural events, music, choirs and popular-culture activities. The date works both as historical remembrance and as a day of affirmation of contemporary Catalan identity.
In the working calendar it is a holiday of Catalonia and not of the rest of Spain. It should not be confused with Spain’s National Day on 12 October or with other regional holidays in September.
