Devotion to the Heart of Jesus has medieval roots, but it was decisively shaped by the visions of St Margaret Mary Alacoque at Paray-le-Monial (1673–1675). In 1856 Pope Pius IX extended the feast to the whole Roman Rite; later popes raised its rank. After the twentieth-century liturgical reforms it remains a solemnity — the highest feast class — in the General Roman Calendar.
Because the date tracks Easter, it can fall anywhere from 29 May to 2 July. Civil calendars therefore never show a fixed day, though June is still the month most associated with Sacred Heart devotion (First Fridays, acts of consecration, parish processions where the title is local).
On Spain’s labour calendar the label appears only as a local holiday in a few municipalities. It is not a national public holiday: each town chooses whether to make it a non-working day, and each municipal page keeps the official bulletin source.
