Saint George is one of the best-known saints in Christian tradition. Although his real story is shrouded in mystery, the image that has survived to this day is that of a brave knight associated with the defense of the faith. The most famous legend presents him facing a dragon to save a threatened population, a scene that made him a symbol of courage throughout Europe.
The link between San Jorge and Aragon comes from the Middle Ages. Law 1/1984 explains that since the 13th century, both the Aragonese monarchy and the army of the Kingdom adopted the patronage of Saint George, associated with the battle of Alcoraz and the tradition according to which the saint would have helped the Christian troops during the conquest of Huesca in 1096. Over time his figure appeared in churches, shields and stories as a symbol of protection and identity.
The celebration of 23 April is old: the Aragonese Cortes of 1461, meeting in Calatayud, declared it a holiday, a decision ratified in the Monzón Cortes of 1564. Already in the autonomous stage, Law 1/1984 officially declared 23 April of each year as Aragon Day, a traditional commemoration of Saint George and a holiday throughout the territory, a date that the Statute of Autonomy expressly includes. It is celebrated in Zaragoza, Huesca and Teruel with institutional events, cultural activities and Aragonese flags, and coincides with World Book and Copyright Day.
