Saint John's Day is linked to Saint John the Baptist, but its popular celebration goes far beyond the religious calendar: it preserves many traditions related to the summer solstice, fire, water and the idea of renewal. That is why the night of 23 June to 24 is experienced as a special night in many areas of Spain, with bonfires, festivals, wishes and, on the coast, night baths to welcome summer.
The best known part is the Night of San Juan. Fire symbolizes purification and change: jumping bonfires or burning papers with wishes represents leaving the negative behind and starting a new stage. In Catalonia the festival is the Revetlla de Sant Joan, with firecrackers, festivals and the typical Sant Joan coca; In Galicia, where it is known as San Xoán, bonfires and roasted sardines stand out; and in the Valencian Community the Bonfires of San Juan de Alicante stand out.
