What is All Saints' Day

1 November is the solemnity of All Saints in the Catholic calendar: it honours all saints, known or unknown, and leads into 2 November, All Souls' Day. In Spanish practice both dates intertwine in the same atmosphere of family remembrance.

The most widespread custom is to visit cemeteries to tidy graves, bring flowers — chrysanthemums above all — and spend time beside deceased relatives. Streets and burial grounds fill from early morning; it is one of the busiest days of the year in municipal cemeteries.

Seasonal sweets appear on the table: huesos de santo, panellets in Catalonia and the Balearics, buñuelos or bunyols in several areas. It is not a costume party in the Halloween style — though that influence grows on the eve — but a more sober date of memory and gathering.

As a fixed autumn feast, All Saints' Day marks the seasonal turn on the festive calendar. When it falls on a Sunday, some communities move the working day off to the following Monday; the meaning of the day stays on 1 November and the gesture of remembering those who are gone.
